I'm really liking the Ampersand label Claybord TM. Vellum and frosted mylar had been my go-to substrates, but for portraiture, I like the white, soft surface of Claybord TM. Graphite and paint glide (slide in fact!) along the surface. The panel is rigid, comprised of a kaolin clay ground and 1/8 artist hardboard support. Once the piece is completed and sealed, it can be presented without a frame if one desires. It's pretty awesome! I buy my Claybord TM from Jerry's Artarama.

I found the surface works really well for ink, too. Very versatile!
